Walter Swan
Coleridge — Walter Swan, 97, Coleridge, died Feb. 3, 2007, at the Park View Haven Nursing Home, Coleridge.
Visitation was Feb. 7 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Coleridge.
A private family service was held Feb. 8 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Coleridge, with Pastor James Scallions officiating.
Burial was in the Coleridge Cemetery.
Walter was born Nov. 3, 1909, on a farm two miles north of Hartington to John and Emily (Pearson) Swan. His parents came to America from Sweden in 1905. He attended Tip Top School. As a young teenager, Walter grew to love playing the accordion and mouth harp. He helped his dad with the farm work, farming with horses and later worked for area farmers. He married Rose Meier Feb. 5, 1934, in Coleridge. Their first farm home was by Pleasant Valley. They later moved to a farm by Bloomfield and in 1944 they purchased their farm three miles east of Coleridge. When Walter was 94 he became a resident of the Park View Haven Nursing Home, Coleridge.
Walter loved farm life, working with his workhorses, his “special” dogs, chicken flock, and working in the yard and his orchard. He was still cutting wood at the age of 94.
A special dog, “Sportie,” gave him joy while at Park View Haven Nursing Home.
He attended the Independent Faith Baptist Church, Wayne.
Walter is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Darlene Jorgensen, Coleridge; Alice and Mert Marshall, Wayne; and Linda and Dennis Praest, Dodge; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great--grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rose, January 26, 2000, at the age of 91; three brothers, Ottmar, Henry and Arthur Swan; three sisters, Sadie Christiansen, Ebbie Mayer and Hilma Lanphear.
